A PLACE TO LIVE, BETWEEN ART,
NATURE AND CULTURE
A visit to the “Borgo of Design Il Torchio” can become an opportunity to visit the surroundings and live an exciting holiday in a unique and evocative area of Italy.
Carimate is a charming village in the province of Como, in Lombardy, located in the southern part of the province, in a hilly area in the north of the Brianza district.
A charming and enchanting place, full of attractions for lovers of art, history, nature and sport, thanks to the presence of many castles, historic buildings, green areas and golf courses. A few kilometres away, Como lake, with its artistic, naturalistic and enogastronomic heritage, awaits visitors with its incomparable charm.
A few steps away from the "Torchio" of Carimate, surrounded by the charm of art and history, the Carimate castle has always been the main identifying element of the town. The first knowledge of a military building on the hills of Carimate date back to 1149. The building, perhaps built on the remains of pre-existing late-roman constructions, was rebuilt in 1345 by Luchino Visconti, owner of the fief. In the following years his descendants made additions and integrations several times, until 1434, when the castle and the fiefdom passed into the hands of Giorgio Scaramuzza Visconti and remained in this family until 1795, the year of the death of Ludovico Visconti, last of this branch. In 1800 they were sold to the brothers Cristoforo and Carlo Arnaboldi of Como, who made it their holiday home. The internal and external restoration work commissioned by Bernardo Arnaboldi Cazzaniga dates back to 1874: an intervention that gave the castle a new face, based on a stylistic reworking of a romantic taste, creating an original mix of styles very different from the original. After a series of changes of hands, in 1986 the castle was sold to an important hotel company that transformed it into a luxury hotel. Today, beside being a prestigious accommodation solution, it hosts events, exhibitions, conventions and cultural initiatives. Staying at this enchanting hotel is an evocative experience, the perfect way to live the "Borgo del Design" in all its charm.
The first knowledge concerning the castle of Casiglio date back to 900, when on the plateau on which stands the structure there was a military outpost with a square plan. The oldest structures, the tower and the first floor, date back to 1100 and in 1200 they underwent extensions that altered the original central court structure. In the fourteenth century cardinal Beltramino Parravicini was probably the author of the renovation project that gave the castle its current appearance. During the fifteenth century the structure became the seat of the consulate of justice in Milan and was further restored. During these years the walls on the floor were frescoed, while during the following two centuries the castle became the property of several noble families, until in 1656 it was returned to the Parravicini family. In 1800 the manor was restored and used as a dwelling. The owner of the time, Giovanni Cavalleri, gathered in the fortress important collections of ancient coins, volumes of history and art, medieval weapons, costumes and archaeological treasures. Subjected to further, careful restoration, today the castle is a unique and refined luxury resort, with suites and rooms different from each other, furnished with antique furniture and fine fabrics and equipped with all comforts to ensure a charming and relaxing stay. The restaurant "Barbarossa", in honour of Federico Barbarossa who was here for the battle of Tassera, was obtained from the ancient cellars and offers a cuisine with a strong focus on regional specialties, accompanied by a wide selection of wines. Casiglio castle is also a privileged location for meetings, conferences or wedding receptions.
In addition to the castle and the ancient village, Carimate is renowned for its golf club, founded in 1962 on an area of 60 hectares, in the centuries-old park of the town. In a varied course, with agile and luminous tracks, you can enjoy the beauty of the green hilly landscape, in a beautiful area renowned for its high attention to nature. One of a kind, the Carimate Golf Club is an homage to italian design: the field was designed by Piero Mancinelli while for the club house the task was given to Guido Veneziani and Vico Magistretti. Mancinelli, a roman engineer who plays golf, designed the route with skill, taking into consideration the differences in the level of the terrain to obtain an exciting, singular field. Magistretti and venetians designed a club house that is very different from the traditional english cottage or country house, presenting a white volume that follows the course of the ground, with windows and cuts overlooking the landscape and the large trees of the park. A special attention is also given to the restaurant located near the one that was originally the hole 1. This is where the "Carimate" chair was born: a classic of italian design produced by Cassina.
